Mom, the boys, and gummy bears
Anyway, where are the gummy bears you ask? Oh, they're in my belly. No, they're not an official part of my "total health" plan, but neither is staying up late to blog. (I would say "holistic health" but that is just so trendy right now ... I'm going for total health instead.)
I've heard it before: Relax, you shouldn't be hard on yourself with all this talk about health. After all, you are producing milk, just moved, your husband started a new job, you left behind a support network, etc. etc.
But here's the deal. I want to be the best me I can be -- ESPECIALLY now, and that requires a certain amount of proper fuel and *GASP* rest. The good fuel is easier for me than the decent amount of sleep goal. In fact I didn't even consider sleep as part of my total health plan until Tuesday night.
Last Tuesday I participated in my friend's online collaborative phone conference group based on the book The Mother's Guide to Self Renewal. Most of this stuff is pretty second nature to me now that I've had a year of great therapy and two years of training in TA, and I feel I had a lot to contribue, but I've got to admit that when Raelee asked us about our sleep habits I was like ...
Sleep? You're asking me about sleep? I'm a mother of an infant and a three year old ... what do you mean do I get enough sleep?
Then, I thought about it ... And I was like:
*YAWN* Yeah, I could be getting more sleep ... and it would feel wonderful.
So I added a sleep amendment to my total health plan.
After all, what is it I do at night that can't be done during the day? Well, for the most part I enjoy the time alone -- finally, after everyone (including my husband) has gone to bed I relish the time to myself. Sometimes I wash dishes and rearrange my pantry (I did just move in to a new home and am still learning which items go best where based on how often I reach for them) and other times I blog or write other things (mostly random thoughts, but usually closely guarded gems). OK, the point is ... Can't I fit this stuff in to some other time of day? I mean, do I need to stay awake until my younger son's midnight nursing so I will be awakened one less time than if I went to bed at 11? (Does that logic make sense to anyone else? I'm assuming most nursing mothers will get what I mean.)
I thought the answer was "yes" ... but here I am on my computer at 11:21 with so much more to say ... and a handful of gummy bears by my side (OK, they're in my tummy) and I am torn ... do I stay up and actually put away the last of the papers sitting on my desk and find a place for my stack of journals or do I brush my teeth and close the laptop? Grrr ... I'm doing so well on everything else: waking up before my older son, showering, styling my hair, yoga, working out, praying, eating well (except for the gummy bears and a few Oreos) ... why is this one thing so hard?!?!
I think that this time at night is precious because I see it as my time. And perhaps I see the other hours as "their" time, which is just not the way it is.
We also talked about nurturing ourselves at the expense of others, vs. to the benefit of others. So what I'm thinking is that time ... one of the most powerful commodities in a family and especially to mothers in my opinion ... doesn't have to be either/or. It doesn't have to be mine or theirs (however one defines "their") it can be ours. I think the next step toward reaching this goal isn't really about setting a time to go to bed and close the laptop. I think it's about claiming the rest of my hours in the day and truly embracing that the things I do for "them" I do for not only myself, but the world (I believe changing the world starts at home -- remember?). I am starting to think that when I reclaim those precious day hours I'll be better able to assign the night hours to sleep.
*Yawn* I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it. So tomorrow I will think about reclaiming my day hours as I go through the day and see what happens at night.
Anyway, if you read this far, you were warned ... I said I'd ramble.
G'night!

Mommy gets to go out with girlfriends!
My friend from HS and two friends from college *just* called and invited me out to dinner since they are in town!
I am excited and don't even remember the last time I saw some of these ladies.
Fortunately, Patrick doesn't mind coming home and watching Wesley at the last minute so I can have a night out ;) Oh ... and we were going to paint the master bathroom ... he'll probably enjoy that too. Or perhaps he'll just play with Wesley and have a fun night of his own. (UPDATE: he played with Wesley and prepared our paint supplies for today.)
I threw together this outfit and think it, along with the red heels, help balance the 45 LBS I've gained so far.
Canoing in the morning and gabbing with girls in the evening ... not a bad day at all!
UPDATE:
We had a wonderful time. Everyone looked great -- maybe even better than in college. I know I feel better than I did about myself back then.
In a way, I had a great time seeing everyone and laughing about silly things. In another way, I wanted to know everyone a little deeper -- What are they doing? What are their dreams. But the conversation stayed light and bounced like a ping pong ball from the recent to the distant past with laughter stringing the two.
The end of the night (for me) came and I told a lie. I said, "It's 9:30? OK, it's safe for me to return home since Wesley is probably asleep."
Then I got in my car and secretly wished that he would be awake long enough for me to give him a hug and a kiss and say good night.
He wasn't. He was cuddled up in bed with his hands by his face, his body wrapped like a caterpillar in a cocoon of white sheets. I kissed him and he didn't stir. And then I talked to Patrick to process the evening.
While I longed for that deeper sister connection, I will cherish for a long while just sitting and chatting about unimportant things -- and feeling beautiful among beautiful woman ... and feeling more free than I felt at 17 -- even with (or perhaps because of) my husband and son and the chores I left behind.
And here we are:

Sleepless in UteroI'd like to tell you that i look like this (picture to the left) all the time. But I don't. My hair isn't even long enough to pull back anymore. The reality is that this (picture to the bottom right) is more accurate -- especially in the mornings. And that picture was taken a day after I had my hair cut for the first time in six months. Honestly, for the amount I paid, it should have still been styled. I gave it a thorough pat down, though, and figured I was good to go for the day.
See the half-dazed smile? That too is pretty typical me in the a.m.
So, who is that woman with the changing hairstyles?
Let me sum it up for you like this:
Then -- searching
Now -- living.
Make sense? OK, I'll elaborate. I've spent a lot of time searching, or more actually waiting, for the right thing ... the right job, the right situation, etc. I couldn't wait to get out of college so I could "start" life. I couldn't wait to have a family of my own so I could "start" nurturing. Boy was I missing out!
I've shifted my focus from future-focused (if only ... ) and past-focused (why didn't I ...) to now-focused ... which is where I am finding the greatest capacity for joy.
So what is going on now? I am studying transactional analysis and redecision therapy, I am taking a yoga class, I am enjoying my back yard, and I am enjoying friends. I love the time I get to myself when my husband is out doing his own thing. And I am enjoying writing. I love to cook and bake and am learning that I am best when I make do without a recipe ... just stick me in the kitchen with a pot, a pan, some spices and random veggies and I'll whip up a healthy tasty meal better than if you put me in there with a cookbook and all the appropriate things.
Sure, I look forward to returning to work one day and applying all that I am learning, but for the first time I am relaxing and enjoying the journey I am on. I feel "there" even though "there" is ever changing. I've thrown away the quest for something constant and perfect ... and have embraced the now that is changing and evolving at every moment.
Boy have I got a lot more growing to do. Fortunately, I am watering that growth. And somehow I managed to pick a great husband who reminds me to pick up that watering can when lack of use threatens a little rust ;)
